In the days immediately after the Gulf War, a group of American soldiers come across a secret Iraqi map, which discloses the whereabouts of a bunker where Iraq is storing stolen gold and treasure from Kuwait. The soldiers hope to take the gold and keep it for themselves. However, when they arrive at the site, they discover that the Iraqi army is more concerned about persecuting its civilians than stopping them from stealing the gold. They learn that the civilians have been encouraged by the U.S. government to rise up and fight Sadaam Hussein, but are facing certain execution because the U.S. military refuses to help them. This incident creates a crisis of conscience for the American soldiers. Do they take the money and run, leaving the civilians to face certain death at the hands of the Iraqi army? Or do they risk losing the gold in order to escort them to safety across the border into Iran?
A movie that only shows American ignorance, full of stupid unrealistic situations. Although I do like George Cloney, but I guess he had a miss hit here (kind of like ocean's twelve!).The movie Stereotypes Arab's, and showing American soldiers as if they are more caring about Iraqi's than Iraqi's themselves. And we all know how true that is….not. When compared with the reality of what's going on in Iraq right now, you just laugh at it. Not that its funny, as its tragically ironic. Very few redeeming points in some of the conversations between Iraqi civilians and the American soldiers. However, not enough to pull the movie out of the hole it should be buried in.
A welcome big-studio remedy to our post-Gulf War sugar high, THREE KINGS seems in its first two reels to be Whit Stillman's LAST DAYS OF BAGHDAD. The writer-director David O. Russell (of SPANKING THE MONKEY and FLIRTING WITH DISASTER) has a Stillman-like bemused-preppie sensibility that just can't work itself up to the gallows humor of MASH or APOCALYPSE NOW. But once the action-movie plot gets in gear, the movie is a fount of invention and of startling truth-telling–a sequence in which an Iraqi torturer recounts the smart-bomb destruction of his family may be the most seditious scene in a studio movie since JFK. The movie is plenty uneven, but it's brave and alive in a way studio movies aren't these days–you get one or two of these a year if you're lucky, so the quibbles don't really matter. And as the gradually wised-up, cornfed reservist hero, Mark Wahlberg has arrived at bona-fide movie-star status–he's the current reigning champ at portraying the confused and agitated decency of Joe Everyman.
